First day of our wartime zoo gardens display …

After a few days off work with a dodgy leg from an  insect bite (always embarassing as zoo staff this!), the launch day of our wartime garden and wartime zoo research project dawned. Plants still to put in, helpful bank holiday rain softening the ground but thinning out visitors by the end of the day.

Lots of interested people visiting our displays and touchtables of objects from wartime life , ranging from primary age children who’d “done world war two” at school   to local re-enacators ( I met a French Foreign legionnaire, sadly not in costume), wartime evacuees from the Midlands and many women interested in the recipe books and fashion magazines. Thankfully we didn’t have time to try out the original recipes using powdered egg this time…

The helmets, gas masks,  letters, scrapbooks and handmade toys and old lead soldiers proved popular objects and talking points.

Pictures to follow!
